ElephantDrive Adds Secure Sharing Services to Online Storage and Backup

October 2, 2007; 04:25 AM

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 2, 2007 -- Earlier today, ElephantDrive Inc. announced the launch of its Secure Sharing Services, the latest extension of the firm's online data services. The feature set enables consumers and small businesses to easily share folders and files with a specific audience directly from their ElephantDrive accounts. Because many of the end users of ElephantDrive take advantage of the online storage and automated backup, most items selected for sharing are already stored in their accounts and require no upload time whatsoever.

"The Secure Sharing Services solve both the simple problem of how to easily deliver large files and the complex problem of how to do it quickly and securely," said Michael Fisher, ElephantDrive's co-founder and CEO. "For users who aren't interested in seeing a bunch of ads or enabling copyright infringement via a P2P program, but do need to share information in a private and secure environment, we are proud to be able to offer such a clear solution."

Because end users of ElephantDrive have their files and folders transferred to their accounts each night by the automatic backup service, there is no upload time when they want to share something -- the waiting is eliminated. Additionally, the shared items are available only to the designated recipients, not published for the world to see, which avoids potentially sensitive or embarrassing information being exposed.

The explosive growth that viral applications like sharing generate underscores the importance of the company's use of Amazon Web Services, specifically Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). Because Amazon S3 is integrated into its storage architecture, ElephantDrive smoothly scales to meet increasing demands on disk capacity and bandwidth and can delay investment in infrastructure until usage levels and growth trajectories are more clearly defined. "ElephantDrive is an ideal customer for Amazon S3," said Steve Rabuchin, Director of Developer Relations for Amazon Web Services. "They are able to focus on what they do best, which is building compelling and intuitive services like Secure Sharing for their customers, while we handle the undifferentiated heavy-lifting of managing their back-end data infrastructure."

Available now, all ElephantDrive users -- including the free Open Edition account holders -- will be able to share from the My Account pages of the website. Windows users also have the option to share using the desktop software, and Mac users will have the same availability in short order.

"This is yet another exciting addition to our platform in which we can leverage our proprietary online storage architecture and virtual file system," said Benjamin Widhelm, President and CTO at ElephantDrive. "Continuing to increase the value our users and subscribers can get out of the service is the best way for us to maintain the exciting growth we have experienced, and it really drives our product development road map."
