Aberdeen Group Reports Twice As Many Organizations Indicate Deployment of Full-Disk Encryption Over File Encryption To Secure Desktops/Laptops In The Next YearRapidly Expanding Use of Encryption Drives Increased Investment in Automated Key Management/Key Distribution Capabilities and a Projected Year-Over-Year Growth in Demand for End-User Device Security of Over 100% September 11, 2007; 01:42 AM
According to the study, the rapid increase in demand for encryption solutions among Best-in-Class organizations has led to an 81% increase in the total number of application types using encryption, a 71% increase in the total number of encryption keys under management, and a 50% increase in the number of locations using encryption compared to a year ago. "The traditional network perimeter security model has been dissolved by more open, flexible network access and distributed computing,” said Derek E. Brink, Vice President and Research Director for IT Security, Aberdeen Harte-Hanks. “In its place, an information-centric approach is emerging that leverages encryption to secure data at rest, and it is combined with a key management infrastructure to protect and control access to the encryption keys that provide the foundation for this higher level of protection," Brink continued. “As networks become ever-more distributed, organizations indicate that they are looking for solutions that can secure the data on their end-user devices.” "With data security and compliance becoming increasingly important WinMagic has witnessed a significant increase in demand for SecureDoc full-disk encryption from organizations looking for the most reliable and transparent method to protect all data on desktops, laptops and mobile devices," said Thi Nguyen-Huu, CEO for WinMagic. "This Aberdeen Group report confirms our belief that more and more organizations now understand that it is impossible to protect data on any device unless it is encrypted,” Nguyen-Huu continued. “Further, the report illustrates that dynamically provisioning encryption keys is fundamental to an enterprise solution, and we believe that SecureDoc is uniquely positioned in the marketplace to satisfy this need." SecureDoc Enterprise Server (SES) edition provides dynamic provisioning of keys/key files to users, including the ability to label keys in human readable terms so that they can be easily identified for encrypted archived data stores. Problems related to unlocking these long-term storage archives are solved as the respective encryption key can now be dynamically provisioned. As a result, even though passwords will not be remembered 20 years from now, the encryption keys will still be easily identified in human readable text formats. It also provides removable media protection, whether the endpoint device is running SecureDoc software or not. Compatible with all editions of Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, and 2000, SecureDoc holds FIPS 140-2 Level 1 and is the only encryption solution to achieve FIPS 140-2 Level 2 from the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) of the US Department of Commerce. SecureDoc has also earned Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 4 (EAL 4) Certification (the highest level that is recognized in over 20 countries worldwide) and has been awarded the BITS Tested Mark. Also, its FORTEZZA-based version of SecureDoc is the only disk encryption software certified by the NSA to safeguard U.S. government’s “SECRET” level data.
