Massachusetts-Based Business Uses Its Own Web Challenges As Inspiration For New Product

June 22, 2007; 08:11 AM
While large corporations pour tons of marketing dollars into IT departments that manage company Web sites, many small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) struggle to maintain fresh and dynamic sites, mainly because of expense. A small business itself, Massachusetts-based Dovetail Internet Technologies embraced this challenge of producing a content management system (CMS) that was fast, easy-to-use and affordable for this overlooked market. The result is novo, a Web site content management system that's been eight years in the making.

Dovetail's novo--the word means change, refresh and revitalize in Latin--uses a database back-end, which means the system isolates content from design, creating a simplified process for providing content updates. This type of approach is beneficial since by creating a distinction between design and content, site managers can focus their energies on updating the site while not concerning themselves with the intricacies of the design elements.

Design themes are used to control the site's format. As a result, sections and individual pages can adhere to their own designs by simply associating pages with a particular template file. An added benefit is that site managers can create new templates, apply them to the site as a whole, and change the complete design templates rather than requiring laborious editing to each page of a site. In addition, novo has industry-specific add-on features for banking and manufacturing.

Unlike other CMS products and companies, Dovetail offers choice when it comes to an organization's purchasing options. Depending on needs, budget and goals, an organization can decide to license the product and own the solution or they can choose a subscription model lowering their up front investment and paying "as they go." For those that want to own the solution but still pay over time, Dovetail also offers financing option. Regardless of the purchasing option selected, companies benefit from web content management features that deliver a fast return on investment.

Michael Villa, Dovetail Internet Technologies founder and president, says, "As a small business ourselves, we had special insight to the challenges facing small- and medium-sized companies. These companies want to be competitive on the Web, they know that e-commerce and the Internet are playing bigger and bigger roles, yet how do they keep up with their competitors when they can't afford to have an IT department or they have to wait around for 'the web guy' to make changes? At Dovetail, our goal was to create an affordable and comprehensive Web site content management system that's easy for anyone to use, fast, and does everything that you want it to do. It was eight years in the making, but we're confident novo will become the premier CMS on the market."
