Webapplica Launches Open Source Community; Previews Web 2.0 Business Applications

June 7, 2007; 07:28 AM
Webapplica, Inc. has launched a new open source community site http://www.webapplica.org. The new community is powered by Jive Software's new Clearspace X community solution. The site is the new home of two projects, Arcticfusion and Coolerserver.

The primary project, Arcticfusion, is a next generation framework for rapid development of Web 2.0 webtop "workspaces" with integrated enterprise features like Services Oriented Architecture (SOA), Single Sign On (SSO) and an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). Aaron Judd, a project founder, describes workspaces as collections of applications, which when combined give a business all the tools you need in a single Web 2.0 application. The applications can be built exclusively within Arcticfusion, or Arcticfusion developers can utilitize the integrated Enterprise Service Bus, to build interfaces to external applications.

Arcticfusion is built using Java 1.5 and the open source platform for creating zero-install web applications, OpenLaszlo (http://www.openlaszlo.org). OpenLaszlo is "write once, run everywhere." An OpenLaszlo application developed on one machine will run on all leading Web browsers on all
leading desktop operating systems. Arcticfusion provides an enterprise architecture, with all the core components, together in a framework to help developers place multiple applications in a single browser window and have them interact with each other. Current run-time environments include AJAX and Flash, while Java Micro Edition and SVG runtimes are in development stages. Arcticfusion provides the overall user interface, the glue to integrate the applications, and the server pieces that make it possible to integrate existing data and services into a seamless Web-based desktop.

Webapplica's core development team is focused on developing Arcticfusion Workspace applications, with the initial release expected to contain several basic applications such as a task manager application, calendaring, and instant messaging. Additional enterprise applications are currently under development, including an ERP interface, and will be released on a regular basis. Alpha releases are available at http://www.webapplica.org site, with a production release planned for mid-July 2007.

Coolerserver is a stable open source PHP 5 project which delivers web content management, email campaign management and integrated e-commerce functionality. The Coolerserver project currently has many deployed installations including sites with over 10,000 pages of content and 20,000 item product catalogs.

Both projects are licensed using the Apache License Version 2.0, a copy of the License may be obtained at http://www.apache.org.
