2007 JavaOne Conference Gets Greener With Significant Efforts To Conserve, Recycle and ReuseMay 7, 2007; 07:15 AM
For the conference, Sun has worked closely with Moscone Center to make JavaOne a more sustainable event. Those efforts are resulting in significant resource savings created from activities which include: Virtual direct mail campaigns, online surveys and feedback forms (according to the Environmental Defense Paper Calculator):
Bike to JavaOne Sun is continuing the "Bike to JavaOne" program it successfully launched last year. Bike to JavaOne promotes eco responsibility outside the conference walls by encouraging employees, customers and partners to bike to the event. Sun has also collaborated with the San Francisco Bike Coalition, a non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to promoting the bicycle for everyday transportation, to offer a free "Bike Valet" service daily from 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. in front of the Moscone Center South Hall. San Francisco Bike Coalition staffers will watch over bikes and give riders free advice on how to keep their cycles in top shape. For more on how Sun is reducing the environmental impact of JavaOne, please visit the JavaOne Conference Eco Corner at: http://java.sun.com/javaone/sf/eco_corner.jsp. About Eco Responsibility at Sun Sun's Eco Responsibility Initiative is guided by three principles: Innovate, Act and Share. Sun innovates by making products and services that are both good for the environment and good for business. Sun acts by operating in an open, eco-conscious way. Sun shares by making information and technology available to others so that we can all move forward and participate in an increasingly sustainable way. One of Sun's eco innovations is the Sun Fire T1000/T2000 server, which is three to five times more energy efficient than its nearest competitor and the only server for which PG&E offers a rebate. Sun also takes responsibility for its products through end of life with its Global Takeback Program, which has allowed 95% of returned products to be recycled or reused. Sun is greening its own operations through programs like Open Work, which saves our environment 30,000 metric tons a year by allowing employees to work from home or in a flexible office.
