MPEG-4 (AVC) Smart Video Encoder System Provides Cost effective Multichannel IP-based Migration

Industry's first multichannel H.264-compliant network appliance includes management software and produces compressed real-time video streams for IP transport over fiber, wire and wireless

November 2, 2006; 01:43 AM

A new video encoder system introduced today by Red Prime intelligently converges camera-based surveillance, MPEG-4 advanced video coding (AVC) and internet-enabled signal transport for unsurpassed performance, remote management and downstream image mining and motion detection. The initial product, RPT-1000, is the first H.264 compliant network appliance to offer multiple channels, intelligent encoding, IP transport and browser- and windows-based client monitoring software for remote configuration and management.

Standard and digital surveillance cameras with or without audio provide system input, and the system's highly compressed real time image streams at 30 frames/second (full 4CIF) drive browser-based monitors anywhere on the Internet via IP transport with remote configuration and management controlled by the RPT ViewManager software. System integrators, VARs and OEMs are the target market.

Red Prime CEO Dr. Michael Kozuch said, "The RPT-1000 accelerates a tipping point for high resolution video in surveillance and security applications. We developed a 'perfect storm' system, converging legacy needs with a system that handles the undeniable higher levels of risk encountered today. Our design helps customers achieve improved value by decreasing per-node costs. Commissioning costs will decline as the security and surveillance industries learn more about the benefits of our MPEG-4 AVC products."

The system maintains extreme security for IP transport. H.264 compression reduces storage by 30%. The basic RPT-1000 produces four channels of high resolution real-time video that dramatically improves human and computer-mediated interaction with the imagery. The cost per-camera node or Internet link is established by the software management requirements, whether a wired, wireless or optical transport is used, and whether additional peripheral features (such as sensors and alarms) are needed. The more cameras per encoder, the lower the cost per channel for cost-sensitive applications. Delivery ranges from immediate to 90 days ARO.

Planned for introduction in 2007 are new multi-channel versions. Looking forward, Red Prime is working on new silicon "that will sharply reduce the form factor or footprint while achieving unsurpassed performance," said Kozuch.

With high resolution and real-time channels, the RPT-1000 is destined to become the front end for automated image processing video surveillance systems that detect motion and provide obstruction alarms, event counting (cars, people etc.) and complex image mining such as facial recognition and metropolitan tracking. MPEG-4 AVC images preserve scene content and clarity, enabling scaling and underscoring Red Prime's tagline, the solution is crystal clear. Supplied RPT ViewManager software handles remote reconfiguration, such as independent channel bandwidth changes. To maximize use of current hardware stocks, the RPT series may be retrofitted to existing surveillance systems that are targeted for upgrade.

The RPT-1000 is the first product in a line designed to scale to 64 channels in a single chassis. A wealth of features spanning input, processing and output are detailed in the data sheet. The RPT-1000 is suited to video surveillance in current analog and digital camera environments for existing and new applications around the globe, with NTSC and PAL support. It thus provides a migration path where legacy (analog) hardware can be accommodated today while higher performance digital video over IP may be retrofitted in the future. Consistent with an all-digital real time surveillance ideology, the RPT architecture supports encryption, hardening and network-attached storage.
