8e6 Technologies Unveils Real-Time Monitoring and Remediation Solution

September 15, 2006; 03:21 AM
8e6 Technologies, a security company dedicated to Internet filtering and reporting, announced a new enterprise reporting suite designed to alert corporate executives and IT professionals about Internet threats coming from within their organization. With this product suite, 8e6 is introducing the new Threat Analysis Reporter, a real-time monitoring and remediation solution that displays an organization's current security threat level, stratified across various gauges in an easy-to-read dashboard interface. Also part of the package is an upgrade to 8e6's flagship forensic Internet reporting product, Enterprise Reporter version 4.0, featuring a redesigned Web-based user interface that provides better visibility to network health and historical user data through a new graphical dashboard.

8e6 will be unveiling the new products at Interop New York during the week of September 18 (booth number 930). Together, the two products provide comprehensive monitoring and reporting of online activity--the best enterprise defense against employee misuse of network resources and time spent off-task.

"We're truly excited to be releasing these two powerful reporting tools to help enterprises overcome insidious threats that often lurk under the guise of employees fast at work on the computer," said Paul Myer, president and COO of 8e6 Technologies. "By having access to both real-time and forensic data, management teams have the breadth and depth of information to make sound risk mitigation decisions, and the means to identify true problem-employees who have the potential to cause the greatest damage and legal liability."

Enterprise Reporting: New Strategic Management Tool

The use of Web filtering to limit or block employee access to online resources is just the first step in securing the online environment and managing employee behavior. Without a reporting component, enterprises have an incomplete view of network activity, a lack of insight into problem employees, and insufficient data to formulate sound risk mitigation strategies and to boost employee productivity.

8e6's solutions provide detailed information that clearly depicts online behavior and user intent, providing a valuable new data set to executive management teams responsible for ensuring safe corporate operations. Data can now be parsed to analyze Internet activity and employee productivity at department, group or individual user levels, and comparisons can be made cross-departmentally to identify aberrant trends and activity against baseline corporate data. By combining the 8e6 R3000 Internet Filter with the Threat Analysis Reporter and Enterprise Reporter 4.0, enterprises have a complete solution for identifying and combating internal threats.

Real-Time Threat Detection and Remediation

8e6's Threat Analysis Reporter identifies Internet threats in real-time through graphical snapshots of Internet traffic, allowing administrators to quickly view multiple threat categories and the "top-offending" categories and users, based on predefined thresholds and policies. It offers three levels of remediation that can be pre-set to automatically enforce corporate security policies. Featuring a customizable threat dashboard and scoring system, this innovative product allows enterprises to fine-tune it to their specifications and unique requirements. Key features include:

-- Drill Down Capability - Through an intuitive, analytical interface, administrators can easily move from main category to subcategory gauges, and then down to specific user activity as they quickly trace unusual activity to the source of the problem.

-- Alert Notification - Allows administrators to set predefined alert actions, based upon alert policy settings for proactive notification about offending users.

-- Lockout and Remediation - Offers low, medium and high severity levels of access denial, as well as manual user lockouts and automatic lockouts via the Alert Manager.

-- Trend Reporting - Provides a historical view of user activities, based upon predefined categories.

Historical Threat Analysis

8e6 Enterprise Reporter is a forensic reporting tool that documents the history of users who violate an organization's Internet Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). It allows administrators to drill down from a high-level query (such as most searched categories) to detailed reports (such as user activity by URL), enabling organizations to correct unacceptable and dangerous behavior by providing accurate and detailed supporting documentation. The Enterprise Reporter is distinguished from other reporting solutions by the level of detail that it reveals about users and their intent. Many corporate employees are sophisticated enough to bypass Web filter by using on-the-fly proxies and other methods to access prohibited content. With Enterprise Reporter in place, IT staff can identify aberrant traffic patterns that uncover violations against a company's AUP, and create documentation to take corrective action. New features in Enterprise Reporter 4.0 include:

-- New Interface with Graphical User Dashboard - A redesigned, Web-based user interface that is intuitive for users and provides better visibility to network health through a new graphical dashboard. The dashboard presents graphs of the seven most commonly used reports - Top 20 Categories, Top 20 Users by Page Count, Top 20 Users by Spyware, Top 20 Sites, Top 20 User Groups, Category Comparison and User Group Comparison - so administrators can quickly identify anomalous network activity and drill down to address the problem.

-- Expanded Reporting Options - Includes several new reporting options to provide the most relevant data that IT and management teams need for evaluating online activity. Key new additions include Wall Clock Time reporting that reveals a more accurate view of a user's time spent on the Internet and a blocked URL request report that demonstrates the filter's effectiveness in preventing unauthorized use of the Web.

-- Serviceability Enhancements - 8e6 has included a new configuration utility for the Enterprise Reporter to simplify the installation and administration process. This program provides a simplified interface for initial setup of the appliance as well as diagnostic tools to help monitor system health.

8e6 Technologies helps lift the burden felt by small or under-staffed IT departments by providing a one-source shop for standalone Internet filtering and reporting solutions. This one-vendor approach to filtering assures that customer support is just a phone call away. Unlike software-based solutions that require network integration and result in confusion over accountability, 8e6 Technologies' customers will not be referred to a technology partner for support.
