MX Logic Reports That When It Comes to Spam, Not All SMBs Are Equal; MX Logic Data Shows SMBs with Fewer Than 1,000 Seats Most Heavily Impacted by Spam

July 28, 2006; 08:18 AM
MX Logic Inc., a leading provider of innovative, easy-to-use email defense solutions for small and medium-sized businesses, announced that companies with fewer than 1,000 employees were the targets of almost 14 percent more spam messages than those with 1,000 to 2,500 employees, according to data compiled by the MX Logic(R) Threat Center.

As the only email defense company focused exclusively on the needs of SMBs, MX Logic now analyzes spam traffic by company size. Its analysis for June found that companies with fewer than 1,000 employees received 68.2 percent spam volume, compared to 54.6 percent spam received by companies with 1,000 to 2,500 employees.

"Smaller businesses have greater vulnerabilities to threats, both email and Web-based, because they invest fewer resources in IT security and have less focus on establishing companywide policies concerning employee email and Web use," said Scott Chasin, chief technology officer, MX Logic.

The company also reported that on average, 0.82 percent of unsolicited commercial email it filtered in June complied with The Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act, the federal anti-spam law.

Overall, the company found that spam accounted for an average of 74 percent of all email through its threat center in June.

Top Email Viruses and Worms in June

In addition to data on spam, MX Logic reported that the top five email worms in June were:

1. Mytob family (207 variants seen)

2. Lebreat family

3. Mydoom.BB

4. Nyxem.D -- AKA Kama Sutra

5. Bagle.FB

"Many of the variants and worm families that are on this list are not new, for example, the Mydoom.BB variant has been around since February 2005," said Sam Masiello, director of threat management, MX Logic. "So if end users aren't keeping their anti-virus solution up to date, email worms will continue to flourish. In addition to end users being more diligent, the responsibility needs to be moved further upstream to the network and service provider."

Monitoring billions of messages per month for over 10,000 organizations worldwide, the MX Logic Threat Center combines advanced, accurate and up-to-the-minute email defense technology and human-messaging expertise to protect MX Logic SMB customers from spam, viruses, worms, phishing attacks and other email threats.
