Datmedia Showcases the Latest in Streaming Media Technology with IET.tv

May 29, 2006; 03:06 AM

Datmedia has partnered with UK's Institution of Engineering and Technology (The IET) to launch IET.tv, a new IPTV research channel, using datpresenter™ software - the very latest in streaming media technology.

IET.tv allows universities from across the UK to create live and on demand video presentations of research that can be distributed to a global audience over the internet. Universities broadcast using just a laptop and webcam, whilst synchronising with PowerPoint slides, flash or video footage. Over 150,000 IET members will be able to keep up with the latest engineering and technology advancements as they happen.

Lectures, seminars and conferences are streamed and automatically archived to allow for instant ‘on demand’ access to content. Viewers can watch and interact with the speaker using live Q & A. Video content is divided into four IPTV channels:
o IET news (about the Institution of Engineering and Technology)
o Technology featuring eight sub channels focused on industry sectors
    o Research seminars
o Corporate presentations (for companies to deliver their white papers and product messages)

Dr Lee Gillam, of the Department of Computing at University of Surrey, commented: “While we are becoming used to receiving digital content, such as pod-casts, from mainstream broadcasters, IET.tv offers the opportunity for research groups within Universities to become content producers. This has significant potential for extending the dissemination and potential impact of research activities. Distances and time-zones are general difficulties in international collaboration; IET.tv can bring researchers just that bit closer together”

Live research broadcasts will take place on a weekly basis, every Tuesday until 4th July at 14:00 BST. Forthcoming speakers and topics include:

30th May 2006: Professor Ian White, University of Cambridge
Multi-service RF over Fibre Systems
6th June 2006: Professor Alan Shore, University of Wales, Bangor
Optical Chaos
13th June 2006: Professor David Jiles, University of Wales, Cardiff
Non-linear behaviour in magnetic materials: theory and practice
27th June 2006: Dr Ken Guild, University of Essex
Service-Differentiated Optical Transport Networks
4th July 2006: Dr Mike Barnes, University of Manchester
More-electric Vehicles
