SPIDER, the Neutral, Industry-Managed VoIP Interconnect Addressing Registry, Launches Using NetNumber Core Technology

May 16, 2006; 07:10 AM

NetNumber, a leading provider of next-generation addressing technology to the communications industry, announced that the SPIDER Registry, the first and only neutral, secure, industry-managed Global Registry of VoIP interconnect addressing data, is launching using NetNumber's next-generation registry infrastructure technology.

The technology components provided by NetNumber to the SPIDER Registry include a robust SOAP/XML provisioning Application Programming Interface (API), a highly-scalable database infrastructure, and a secure data distribution service that will enable every service provider utilizing SPIDER data to receive a customized view of the database containing only the addressing data provisioned by their trusted interconnect partners. The shared services provided by SPIDER through the NetNumber registry platform include public and private account creation, number provisioning, interconnect address provisioning, interconnect relationship management, account consolidation, and configuration of trusted partner SPIDER data feeds.

"NetNumber is excited about playing a role in the development of the SPIDER registry because we believe SPIDER will facilitate multiple business models with a global VoIP interconnect ecosystem," says Glen Marschel, CEO, NetNumber. "SPIDER isn't trying to dictate any specific type of interconnect business model but rather provide the minimum set of shared addressing tools necessary to facilitate multiple interconnect models."

Paul Doherty, General Manager, SPIDER Registry, Inc. comments, "The SPIDER Registry will revolutionize the industry as the only open and competitive industry solution to facilitate worldwide VoIP Peering and termination. It was critical to ensure that SPIDER was created with the support of the right underlying core technology partner. NetNumber's robust platform, wide range of communications related addressing services and depth of experience made them the clear choice to enable the efficient exchange of addressing information between the various 'islands' of VoIP services."

SPIDER provides a set of shared interconnect addressing tools to the VoIP industry that are made available to all industry participants under equal terms and conditions. SPIDER data is distributed to downstream addressing servers (ENUM servers and SIP redirect servers) via a published data distribution protocol. Address resolution queries are issued on a call-by-call basis by service providers to either on-site or third-party hosted addressing servers that have been certified to receive a SPIDER data feed. In addition to providing core registry technology to the SPIDER Registry, NetNumber is also a provider of addressing server technology that service providers can license to integrate SPIDER data into their interconnect addressing solutions.

The NetNumber Transactional IP Telephony Addressing and Numbering Server (TITAN) server is a next-generation addressing platform that supports both legacy SS7/C7 addressing applications as well as IP- based addressing applications like Carrier-ENUM and SIP-Redirect services utilizing SPIDER data.

Douglas Ranalli, Founder and Chief Strategy Officer at NetNumber adds, "SPIDER is providing the industry with a core set of shared address exchange services that are necessary to enable widespread interconnect of IP-based services like VoIP. Our next-generation TITAN addressing server, currently licensed and utilized by companies such as Cisco, Yahoo, Level3, T-Mobile USA, Telcordia and many others, is a multi-protocol addressing system that allows communication service providers to not only utilize SPIDER data, but also support other customer-defined registry services like existing country-specific number portability databases."

NetNumber licenses TITAN server software to fixed-line carriers, mobile operators, ITSPs, VoIP interconnect providers and content providers to deliver a wide range of communications related addressing services. The TITAN platform has also been licensed to a variety of large equipment manufacturers on an OEM basis for tight integration into their next-generation network architectures.

"TITAN can be configured to act as either an ENUM server or SIP redirect server using SPIDER data to discover interconnect addresses provisioned into SPIDER by your trusted interconnect partners," says Bob Walter, VP Development and CTO at NetNumber. "TITAN is unique in its ability to support multiple query/response protocols as well as multiple services including LNP/MNP number portability, MMS, IMS and VoIP."

Query/response protocols supported on the TITAN include: SS7/C7 (AIN 0.2, IS-41, PCS-1900, GSM/MAP, and INAP CS1 & CS2) over both T1/E1 links and SIGTRAN/M3UA interfaces as well as SIP, DNS, ENUM and SOAP/XML.
