Google's free instant messaging and VoIP service Google Talk released a major update to its client software.  Google Talk now includes three new features named File Transfers, Voicemail, and Music Status.

Google said the ability to transfer files was the top requested new feature.  Following the update users can send all types of files to their contacts, using Google Talk's peer-to-peer network. The feature comes with a few unusual extras: sending a photo will insert a preview of the image directly into the chat session.

Voicemail lets users leave sound messages to contacts who are offline. They can also leave voicemail messages for people who do not use Google Talk--they will receive an email with the message attached as an audio file.

With Music Status, the current playlist can be inserted into the chat window.  By selecting select Show current music track from the status drop-down menu, Google Talk users can now let their friends see what song they are listening to.

Additional new features include more customization options and compatibility with BlackBerry Devices.
