O3Spaces announced the availability of its document collaboration and management environment that tightly integrates with the open source office suite OpenOffice.org and its commercial sibling StarOffice. “Up until now OpenOffice.org lacked a back-end solution similar to Microsoft Office SharePoint,” says O3Spaces CEO Rob Mentink. “Our software provides workgroups and businesses that use OpenOffice.org/StarOffice with a powerful collaboration and document management tool.” While O3Spaces is developed for use with OpenOffice.org/StarOffice, it can handle Microsoft Office documents equally well. This is crucial for companies and users that work in mixed environments.

“During development O3Spaces focused on ease of use, as well as excellent features,” says Rob Mentink. Seamless integration of O3Spaces with OpenOffice.org/StarOffice means that users can perform most of the actions without leaving the office suite. Users can access documents stored in O3Spaces directly from within OpenOffice.org, while O3Spaces takes care of automatically checking the documents in and out as well as creating separate versions for each editing session.

O3Spaces also sports a feature-rich, easy to use and highly customizable Web interface. Users can quickly create workspaces for particular tasks or projects and use them to keep tabs on the related documents. Users can communicate with each other from within the workspace.

“We are confident that O3Spaces provides an excellent cost-effective solution for companies and workgroups,” says Mentink. “Our initial presentation of the software at CeBIT 2006 generated a lot of interest and our trials in Germany and the Netherlands proved to be very successful.” O3Spaces offers companies a powerful collaboration and document management solution. It also makes OpenOffice.org a viable alternative to expensive proprietary technologies such as Microsoft Office and SharePoint.“
