Jabber, Inc. today announced the results of load and scalability testing conducted in Sun Microsystems’ Benchmark Centers. The tests were performed on the Jabber Extensible Communications Platform (Jabber XCP) and began with a benchmark of 420,000 concurrent users on two Sun Fire™ T2000 servers. At the peak of scalability testing, the messaging platform was supporting in excess of one million concurrent users in a single Jabber XCP domain stretched across eight Sun Fire T2000 servers. Each additional server added the capability to support an incremental 150,000 concurrent users. Over the course of the trials, Jabber, Inc. reports that CPU utilization decreased significantly with each additional box, even with the additional users, suggesting that the efficiency of Jabber XCP increases with greater scale.

“Efficient and predictable scalability is an essential attribute of commercial grade messaging and presence platforms,” said Dave Uhlir, vice president of marketing at Jabber, Inc. “This benchmarking proves that Jabber XCP can handle the most demanding challenges of scale such as those found in consumer-facing telecommunications applications. As service providers across the telecommunications landscape upgrade their offerings, these tests reaffirm Jabber XCP’s position as the only solution combining scalability, a flexible programming model, and broad protocol support with the hardware efficiencies necessary to power their vision.”

Jabber, Inc. participates at the Partner Level in the Sun Partner Advantage Program for Independent Software Vendors (ISV). According to Sun, organizations at the Partner Level have demonstrated a greater commitment to the Sun platform, having already developed or planning to develop products or services using Sun technology in the next 12 months. Partners have access to the full complement of Sun’s tools and resources for creating, marketing, and delivering solutions on Sun, which in the case of Jabber, Inc. also included a significant commitment of time and resources from the Sun Solutions Center in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the tests were conceived, architected, and conducted.

“Sun Benchmark Centers are recognized globally across industry vendors as the premier testing facilities for Sun’s ISV partners,” said Yousef Yacoub, senior director of global partner engineering at Sun Microsystems. “Using innovative Sun technologies with Sparc Coolthread™ in Sun Fire T2000 servers and the Solaris 10 OS, Jabber XCP went through rigorous trials within our labs and emerged to demonstrate highly scalable and reliable characteristics of their solution, which Sun Benchmark Centers can independently verify.”

Jabber XCP is the world’s most widely deployed presence and messaging platform based on the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP). According to Jabber, Inc. there are nearly 50 million worldwide users of the protocol for presence-enabled services including instant messaging (IM). Those numbers count more than 10 million Jabber XCP subscribers, 10 million LiveJournal users, 10 million Internet Service Provider (ISP) subscribers, nearly 10 million open source users, and an unpublished number of Google™ Talk subscribers.
