In the world of wireless development, the backend database of choice is overwhelmingly Microsoft SQL Server, according to Evans Data Corporations Volume II 2006 Wireless Development Survey. In this latest report, a third as many more wireless developers are using MS SQL Server as MySQL. Nearly 30% of all wireless development uses MS SQL Server, whereas 20% use MySQL. Even though Oracle came in third for databases for wireless apps, Oracle usage is expected to increase during the next year.

A key focus of Microsoft is on the occasionally connected user or application, said John Andrews, Evans Datas President. They recognize the future is all about mobility for people and enabling a continuum of data across all products from the data center to the mobile device.

In other findings from the November 2006 survey of over 380 wireless developers:

  • More than 40% of wireless developers are working with location based services Google tools and maps are the clear favorite.
  • Use of C# amongst wireless developers has increased by 24% over the last six months, with over 41% of wireless developers now using C# at least some of the time.
  • Today, 47% of developers doing wireless work are targeting smartphones. PDA targeting is down by 20% from last year.
