If you’re working to create a successful blog, whether it’s a standalone piece or in conjunction with a website or social media personality, having loyal followers and readers is going to be the most important thing to you. So if you aren’t seeing your numbers rise as well as you’d like or your viewership has been slipping recently, it’s time to take a look at what you’re doing and how that might be affecting things.

For many bloggers, there are mistakes they’re unknowingly making that cause readers to bounce from their page and seek entertainment or information elsewhere. To make sure this isn’t happening to you, here are three things you might be doing that are driving your readers away and how to fix them. 

You Don’t Write Conversationally

There’s a big difference between the content you’re creating for your blog and the content you might be writing for your website or on more professional platforms. While the content on your website might be very informational and promotional, that’s not what blog content should be like.

When you do this, you don’t allow your personality to shine through, which can be a big reason why people want to read your content in the first place. To fix this, try to write more closely to how you actually talk in your real life. 

Your Blogs Are Too Short

While it’s true that people don’t often want to spend ten or even five minutes reading a blog post, if you err too far in the opposite direction by making your blog posts too short, you might be turning off some of your readership.

So although we know that people don’t spend much time reading big pieces of content online very often, QuickSprout.com advises that you try to create content that has a bit more length to it if you want to attract more visitors. Keep in mind, however, that your content needs to serve a purpose, not just be full of fluff so you can reach a higher word count. 

You Don’t Know Who Your Target Audience Is

One of the hardest parts about blogging is ensuring that you’re getting the people within your target audience onto your blog and reading your content. But before you can get to this point, you have to know very clearly who your target audience is.

Without this information, NeilPatel.com shares that you’ll have a very hard time appealing to anyone. Once you know the exact type of person you’re ideally writing to, you’ll be better able to add details and relevant information that will attract them to your content.
